PRESENTATIONS

Negotiations, Suicide and the Aftermath
Presented by Mike Rand and Debbie Eglin
A chronological case study of two local high-profile incidents involving suicidal subjects and the negotiations that led to the resolution.  A discussion examines the toll a negotiation takes on the negotiator, and the importance of taking care of yourself and your partner.

PTSD - The Fight Continues
Patrick Mateer talks about returning from Iraq to find that nothing is the same. He will detail how he dealt with PTSD, the signs of PTSD and how to help someone with PTSD so that no one gets hurt. The presentation will hopefully teach others to recognize someone with PTSD.

Negotiating with Returning Veterans
Dr. Mullins’ presentation explores the negotiation process when communicating with returning veterans. He describes some of the challenges facing returning veterans and discusses crisis team response issues (negotiators, command and tactical).

Barricaded Subject – Durham, Ontario
Presented by Det./Sgt. Randy Hennings
Debrief of an incident in which the Durham Regional Police Service Command Team, assisting a smaller Service with a barricaded subject, attempted to execute an arrest warrant on a male for domestic offenses. Officers fired and then retreated when the subject was heard “racking” a gun upstairs. The subject barricaded himself upstairs with his mother.

Intelligence-Led Negotiations
Presented by Sgt. Daniel Oblinger
This presentation will review the Intelligence Cycle and how it can be used by crisis negotiators.  It examines the power of analyzed intelligence in successful negotiations, including internal police and government databases, human sources, and open sources on the internet.  Special emphasis will be given to social networking and media sites.
