The VALOR Project - A Law Enforcement Near Miss Database (LENMDB) Print E-mail

The annual FBI Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) report provides a great deal of information about how and why police officers die. However, it does not provide any information about how and why officers live. Such information is perhaps even more critical for officer survival.

Many officers have stories about specific actions that resulted in officer survival. In order to begin to capture information on such “near misses”, Matt Sztajnkrycer, MD, PhD has created the Law Enforcement Near Miss Database (LENMDB).

The goal is that by systematically analyzing these near miss events and empower officers with the knowledge and skills to survive. Anyone with such information may submit to this database. Although it is primarily directed towards officer injuries, any information concerning suspect and/or bystander care would also be welcomed.

The database can be accessed at the following Web site: www.valorproject.org. It is completely anonymous and is hosted through a secure research website. On a quarterly basis, general summary data and emerging trends will be posted to be used as a learning tool.  The Web site will also serve as a dissemination point for new and important tactical combat casualty care-related articles; these will be posted on a regular basis to be downloaded.
